Lisa Hutson

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a self-taught visual artist returning to art. My high school art teachers recognised my talent and introduced me to a variety of mediums, techniques and disciplines. About 20 years later I took an opportunity to take a few drawing classes at a community college. While there, I found the truth of my gift to be strong and adaptable. Another 20-25 years later, I jumped off a cliff, left my job, returned to creating artwork and started driving for a rideshare company to retain my basic needs. I had to make this desperate move to feed and heal my soul. Consequently, I have attained great peace along with years of professional artwork and commissions. Lately, I have experienced financial and life challenges that have rattled my vision as a successful full-time artist, but the gift of art will be my last relationship with wholeness and sharing. Forty years is a very long time to be without your first love however, I will always be grateful for the early recognition when it was desperately needed.

BIO

Lisa Hutson is a visual artist who has been a lifelong resident of the Greater Cleveland, Ohio area. She has chosen pastel, acrylic and oil mediums to create realistic and expressive portraits, landscapes and abstract artworks over the past 8 years. As a self-taught artist, Lisa's work can be analyzed as 30% talent, 30% practice and 40% intuition, which can be observed in the multi-layering of line, light and color. Lisa finds movement and presence in her abstracts and landscapes when she creates contrast through stillness and depth. She feels that her portrait work is a personal gift to clients and herself as she meets the challenge with excitement, participation, and finally, letting go. Lisa has created portrait commissions primarily in pastel and acrylic and greatly appreciates her repeat customers, as well as new ones. Lisa feels her work must and will continue.

I first learned about Lisa Hutson through an author I follow on social media. I had been thinking for some time that I wanted to have a portrait done of my beloved 17 year old mix breed dog. I surveyed Lisa's website for the details & sent her an email along with the photograph I hoped she could paint.  Via a phone call she answered my questions  (one was how durable are pastels? Very -- they last over a hundred years). Then in about a week she emailed some "proofs" of the painting in process. By the end of the 2nd week the portrait was done & I received it in perfect condition -- it was packaged extremely well with bubble wrap & cardboard. I am so pleased with how it turned out, and I encourage you to go for it!

“In 1986, my husband took a snapshot that caught a moment of pure joy. That photo remained a favorite for decades, and when I saw Lisa Hutson’s work, I knew I’d finally found a painter who could make art out of an instant of captured happiness.”
